NERINT

The Brazilian Centre for Strategy and International Relations (NERINT) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), established in 1999, was the first centre focused exclusively on education and research in International Relations in Southern Brazil. It was founded by Professors Paulo Fagundes Visentini and Luiz Dario Ribeiro (History), Álvaro Luiz Heidrich (Geography), Carlos Schmidt Arturi (Political Science), Juan Algorta Plá (Economics), and was soon joined by Marco Cepik (Political Science). Early on, the centre became a registered Research Group under the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), an agency affiliated with the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation dedicated to fostering research in Brazil. NERINT was initially housed within the Latin American Institute for Advanced Studies (ILEA/UFRGS), where it remained for 16 years as a multidisciplinary research centre. Its objective is to foster teaching, research, and outreach projects, as well as to develop an editorial programme capable of bridging the national bibliographical gap within the field of International Relations. Following a brief period based at the UFRGS Undergraduate Degree in International Relations, it joined the Centre for International Studies on Government (CEGOV), a multidisciplinary research centre dedicated to public policies in the international arena, which is directly affiliated with the University’s Rectorate.
